ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
Hands off HRI was set up in 2016 to campaign against the closure or downgrading of hospitals or health services within the Huddersfield and Calderdale area, particularly against the planned closure of Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, it’s A&E department and acute services.
The Campaign intends to mount a legal challenge against Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust’s current plans for the removal of A&E and Acute Services from Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
Hands off HRI campaigns locally, and works with and supports other health campaigners, locally, regionally and nationally. We’re active members of the national campaign body, Health Campaigns Together, of which our Chair, Mike Forster is Vice-Chair.
As well as from residents and others affected by the proposals, we seek support from politicians, local and national. We’re very pleased to have the support of four local MPs: Thelma Walker, Paula Sherriff, Barry Sheerman, and Tracy Brabin. Our local council, Kirklees, also has serious concerns over the Trust’s plans, recently referring them to the Secretary of State for Health.
We actively campaign and fund-raise in Huddersfield and surrounding towns and villages, through information stalls, regular events, petitions and demonstrations. We have a growing membership, many active local groups, and elected Legal and Finance, Events and Fundraising, and Media committees. Campaign business is overseen by an elected Steering Committee, and direction is set through the Annual General Meeting. All posts are voluntary and unpaid.
