On the 4th September the Chairperson of Hands Off HRI embarked on a 200 mile sponsored walk to help raise funds for the group’s legal challenge to be launched within the next few weeks.  Mike has walked from Settle in the Yorkshire Dales to the Holy Island on the Northumbrian Northern coast.  The total journey took Mike through the Pennines and Northumbrian moors.  On reaching his destination – Mike Posted on the Hands Off HRI official Facebook page “Holy Island reached this morning.  Walked the circumference of the island.  The tide came in and has cut off the whole island.  Amazing beaches and views.  That’s it folks.  200 miles complete.  See you all soon.

Mike has had some interesting tales to tell during his journey; at Belford yesterday he reported “Today you almost lost your chair to a stampeding herd of bullocks but hey ho still here to tell the tale…..Oh and also had to negotiate crossing the A1 and live railway line ” On the 13th September Mike stopped over at Hexham famous for its Abbey (dating back to 674 and, always working, informed the Group that Hexham’s local authority had bought out their hospitals PFI debt!

This isn’t the first time Mike has walked for the Campaign, completing the 20 mile Sponsored Walk from Dewsbury to Marsden in August and last year, he walked the Coast to Coast walk from Robin Hood’s Bay to St Bee’s in the Lake District which was around 180 miles.  He managed to raise just over £600 but hopes that with the judicial review pending, he will attract more support.  He has so far had sponsorship worth just over £700 but hopes the total will rise now he has completed the walk

Before Mike left on his adventures he said:

“Last year people were extraordinarily generous and responded very positively to our appeal for sponsorship.  Of course this year, the stakes are a lot higher.  We’re no longer just talking about A & E but the bulldozing of our local hospital.  We are all determined in hands Off HRI to do whatever it takes to stop these proposals, even if it means taking time out to walk 200 miles!  I’m looking forward to the challenge and am confident I’ll complete the whole route”.

Mike can be sponsored by directly depositing your donation into the Hands Off HRI Bank Account

Everyone involved with Hands Off HRI would like to say a big thank you to Mike and his partner Jen for showing such commitment to the campaign in walking such a long distance to raise funds for the legal challenge.

The fundraising continues in their absence with a very successful stall at the recent Slaithwaite Country Fair where the fundraising team earned £712 towards the legal challenge.

Further fundraisers are planned including two Halloween Events in October and a Family Christmas Party in December.  Further details to be released in the near future.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Kirklees for their continued support.
